The Light Blues fell behind when Connor Goldson diverted the ball into his own net, but they were quickly on level terms when James Tavernier dispatched from the penalty spot following a foul on Ryan Kent.
Antonio Colak completed the turnaround prior to the half-time interval, before goals from Fashion Jr. and a second of the evening from the Croatian rounded off a terrific display from the Gers in the capital.
Michael Beale named an unchanged side from Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Kilmarnock, with Antonio Colak given the nod to lead the line once again after impressing in the victory over the Ayrshire side.
There was early encouragement for the Light Blues when a sweeping move down the left, stemming from a neat turn from Todd Cantwell in the centre of the pitch, drew a free-kick on Fashion Jr. from Chris Cadden. A searching delivery into a dangerous area from Borna Barisic looked destined to be headed goalwards by a Rangers body, but the home side cleared to safety despite referee Don Robertson awarding a goal-kick.
Beale’s men suffered an early setback on the evening when Connor Goldson diverted the ball into his own net from Matthew Hoppe’s cut-back after the Hibs forward broke free at the far post from a deep free-kick.
However, the away side certainly weren’t in the mood to feel sorry for themselves as parity was restored less than two minutes later. Fashion Jr. collected the ball in midfield before driving menacingly at the Hibs defence, releasing Kent at exactly the right moment before the winger drew a sliding challenge from Will Fish.
Referee Don Robertson initially waved away the Rangers appeals, but he was advised to go to the pitchside monitor by VAR and he swiftly overturned his decision. James Tavernier took charge of the ball and dispatched his penalty with typical aplomb to draw his side back level.
Fashion Jr. was giving the home defence issues aplenty with his energy and pace, springing in-behind the Hibs defence down the left before picking out Kent with his pull-back. The Englishman met his pass first-time, but he could only steer his finish agonisingly wide of the post.
The Light Blues were in complete control and carried an attacking swagger to boot despite the concession of the early goal. Tavernier arrowed a gorgeous pass over the Hibs defence to the onrushing Kent on 19 minutes with only David Marshall to beat, although an expertly-timed last-ditch challenge from Cadden denied the winger from unleashing a shot at goal.
Particular joy was being derived from the flanks for the Gers, with Colak firing off target minutes later after he was picked out by Fashion Jr. following neat interplay between the Zambian and Barisic on the left-hand side.
Rangers continued to sustain their energy on and off the ball, going close just beyond the half-hour mark following an intricate move. The ball was fed into Cantwell inside the danger area before the midfielder stabbed a cross that arrived towards Barisic at the far post, with the Croatian meeting it first-time on the volley and drawing an impressive reflex save from Marshall.
The visitors’ endeavour was then rewarded moments later as they completed the first half turnaround. The architect was once again Fashion Jr., causing havoc down the left-hand side before he picked out Colak from the byline and the Croatian produced a deft flick at the near post to stab his finish beyond the Hibs goalkeeper.
Hibs were indebted to Cadden’s recovery pace shortly before the interval as the defender thwarted Fashion Jr. after he was released beyond the hosts’ defensive line from a slide rule pass from Ryan Jack.
The Gers started the second half in much the same way that they ended the opening 45 minutes. Raskin lifted his head in midfield and released Fashion Jr. down the left for the Light Blues, with Marshall intervening as the Zambian flashed the ball across goal in search of Colak.
And the third goal duly arrived for the dominant Light Blues six minutes after the restart. David Marshall’s kick was short and met by the head of Jack, directing the ball back towards Fashion Jr. inside the penalty box who swivelled and dispatched a cool left-footed finish to extend his side’s advantage.
Beale’s side had their tails up following the third goal and they were worthy of their fourth goal when it arrived just shy of the hour-mark. An intricate move within a congested Hibs penalty area allowed Kent and Fashion Jr. to combine, poking a pass into Colak whose finish deflected into the bottom corner.
Rangers thought they had a fifth goal of the evening when Fashion Jr. tapped home from a pinpoint James Tavernier cross, but the linesman raised his flag and VAR confirmed the on-pitch decision.
The hosts were throwing bodies in front of the ball to deny Rangers from further stretching their advantage, with Colak denied a hat-trick from close-range after terrific work from Kent on the left-hand side.
The manager rung the changes with 14 minutes remaining as he introduced Alfredo Morelos, Scott Wright, Scott Arfield, John Lundstram and Ianis Hagi with a fifth goal very much in Rangers’ sights.
Morelos nearly got himself on the scoresheet in one of his first actions on the pitch, collecting a searching Ben Davies pass and forcing Marshall into a diving stop.
The contest ticked into stoppage time when Wright wriggled free on the edge of the penalty area and stung the palms of Marshall before Hibs hacked the ball to safety as it trundled across the six-yard box.
Two minutes of additional time were announced as the referee brought the game to the end, capping off a convincing display from the Light Blues.
