The Colombian striker netted either side of the interval to ensure the three points go back down the A90 tonight, with his goals coming after James Tavernier missed a penalty – an incident which saw Ryan Hedges sent off for the Dons.
From the team which defeated Celtic last Saturday in the last league outing, Ianis Hagi came in to replace Kemar Roofe with Roofe missing out today through injury.
That meant it was back five of Allan McGregor in goal with James Tavernier, Connor Goldson, Leon Balogun and Borna Barisic in front of him.
Steven Davis, Glen Kamara and Joe Aribo were in midfield, while up front, Hagi and Ryan Kent supported striker Alfredo Morelos.
Gers could actually have been ahead inside 25 seconds. James Tavernier’s lofted ball forward deceived Ash Taylor and reached Morelos just inside the area, but he fired wide of target as Joe Lewis came rushing out.
Sam Cosgrove saw a shot go just over at the other end as Aberdeen threatened for the first time, while Ianis Hagi had a super, dipping effort land on the roof of the net from over 25-yards following fine pressing from Ryan Kent and Glen Kamara to win him the ball.
A brilliant ball in from Borna Barisic was flicked backwards by Hagi into the path of Kent who showed composure to work the angle for a shot, but he found Jonny Hayes on the line blocking his shot.
The ball came back out, however, for Tavernier who drilled it goalwards, but denying him with a fine save was Lewis how got down low to his right to turn the strike over for a corner.
Rangers were really starting to motor, and on 25 minutes, they were awarded a penalty. Joe Aribo played a lovely ball through for Morelos, and as he went to shoot, he was clipped from behind by Ryan Hedges.
Hedges was shown a straight red card by referee John Beaton given he’d made no attempt to play the ball, and Tavernier was given the opportunity to take. Unfortunately, despite sending Lewis the wrong way, the penalty skipped wide of the post.
That wasn’t to stop Gers’ momentum, however, and on 33 minutes, they grabbed the lead.
Tavernier, having dusted himself down from the penalty miss, left Hayes for dead out on the right and fed Ryan Kent inside the area.
Kent then picked out Morelos to his right, and he shifted away from Scott Wright and Taylor to pick his spot beyond Lewis and hand the visitors a deserved lead in the Granite City.
Gers continued to dominate, and Curtis Main could have followed Hedges down the tunnel following a high, dangerous tackle on Barisic.
Into the second half, and Gers showed brilliant patience to work the first chance of the half, with Tavernier finally cutting the ball back for Kent just inside the area, but unfortunately, he slipped as he struck it and fired wide.
On 50 minutes, Gers went two to the good, and again, it came at the end of a superbly patient and controlled move from the visitors.
Ianis Hagi played a lovely ball wide for Joe Aribo to jink by Hayes and pick out Ryan Kent in the middle.
Kent superbly flicked it behind him, and there coming in on the end of the ball for his second of the game was Alfredo Morelos – and that being the Colombian’s 10th of the season.
Kent came so close to one himself, cutting in from the right and letting fly from 25-yards wit Lewis making a stunning save to tip the ball over.
At the other end, a largely redundant Allan McGregor was called upon to expertly tip a quickly taken Hayes free-kick shot away, while Aribo had a deflected effort held by Lewis.
On 67 minutes, Aberdeen pulled a goal back. Gers were perhaps caught too far up the park and Matty Kennedy found space for a shot on the edge of the area which he gave McGregor no chance with.
Lewis saved well from a decent Glen Kamara effort late-on as Gers looked to make sure of the points – but despite the goal Aberdeen pulled back, Rangers saw the game out so comfortably with no further chances conceded.
