Played as three-30 minute periods, Gers netted twice through Sheyi Ojo and Greg Docherty to bring to a close what has been a fantastic week of training here on the Portuguese south coast.
The Light Blues began the game very much on the front foot, and Ojo came close to opening the scoring early-on, sending a curling effort wide of goalkeeper Conrad Logan’s right-hand post.
Ojo then turned provider for Jermain Defoe, sending him clear on goal, but Logan was quick off his line to close the angle and block his effort on the edge of the area.
The Light Blues were really beginning to motor, and Jamie Murphy, on his return from injury, looked unlucky to be ruled offside following a great ball over the top from captain James Tavernier. Murphy made no mistake in lobbing the ball over Logan, but the flag was already up to deny him.
Then, with 20 minutes showing on the clock, Ranges grabbed a deserved lead. Coming down the left, Jon Flanagan made the overlapping run beyond Murphy and crossed to the near post for Defoe.
Logan dived in to deny him, but the ball deflected to the back post and sliding in there to score was Sheyi Ojo, prodding the ball home from no more than a yard out.
It should have been 2-0 soon after, with Flanagan again involved to play a lovely, defence-splitting pass through to Defoe but in the act of shooting, he was denied by an excellent, last-ditch tackle, clearing the ball to safety just before the first 30 was up.
Gers continued to dominate proceedings, and a lovely, one-touch passing move involving Jordan Jones and Joe Aribo on the right-side really deserved a finishing touch when the ball reached Greg Stewart just inside the area. Again, however, Mansfield got bodies back to block the attacker’s shot.
Jones then probably should have had a penalty when he was bundled over just inside the area following a slaloming run from a central starting position, but his appeals were waved away by the Portuguese officials.
The final third of the match saw the introduction of a number of the club’s Academy players, and coming close to opening the scoring with a stunning effort was Josh McPake.
Receiving the ball on the edge of the area with his back to goal, he turned and rasped a shot goalwards with replacement ‘keeper Bobby Olejnik doing extremely well to get a hand to the ball to turn it over.
From the resulting corner, Alfredo Morelos won the ball at the back post and fired it back across goal, and while Nikola Katic got something on the cross, he couldn’t turn it in goalwards.
McPake was having quite an impact, and after some fantastic persistence on the wing, he crossed to the front post for Morelos, but again the goalkeeper was level to a Rangers effort on goal yet again.
A deflected Morelos effort on the turn came off the inside of the post while he was to be denied again by the goalkeeper before the scoring was finally added-to in the closing stages by Greg Docherty.
Shuffling the ball onto his right-foot just inside the area, he generated terrific power to beat the ‘keeper and set the seal on victory for Gers on their last night in Portugal.
