Gilmour sat down exclusively with RangersTV ahead of their first cup tie against Dumbarton in the SPFL Trust Trophy on Wednesday night.
He reflected on Sunday’s winning performance against a tough East Kilbride side, reiterating the importance of exposure in the Lowland League for the squad’s development. He said: “I think we look back with a lot of positives in the performance and in the result as well.
“We had a few sticky moments in the game, but that this is why we’re doing it. We want it to be like that, we want them to be put under pressure in different ways, and they certainly were when playing against an experienced side on Sunday.
“We’re under no illusion there is a long way to go. As much as we are pleased that it has been a good start to the league campaign there is a long way to go, improve on and work towards as well.”
“When you go play against experienced players who have been in the game for several years at a big level, it’s a chance to go out as a young player and test yourself against these men who have been there and seen a lot in the game. It can only benefit in the long term.
The Rangers B coach looked ahead to Wednesday nights fixture against Dumbarton in the Challenge Cup and how the squad are preparing whilst expressing their excitement to play in a variety of competitions this season. He added: “It's another exciting one! It’s a different format with it being a cup competition.
“Dumbarton are an experienced side, and they have good players who will be wanting to get to the next round of that competition as well so it will be another challenge. We are under no illusions that it will be a tough test.
“We will do what we always do, we’re prepared, we are ready, and we will go try and implement ourselves in the game as well and see where it takes us.”
