The Light Blues produced a positive performance on both sides of the ball to seal their place in the last eight of the competition, with Bailey Rice converting from the penalty spot before Findlay Curtis added a second goal of the evening midway through the second half.
Speaking to RangersTV after the match, Campbell expressed his delight at how his young players stood up to the challenge: “I’m really pleased with the performance. We spoke last time about the difference between the league and cup, and the different demands that we place on the players. They dealt with those demands really well.
“We had a slight change in formation but the principles remained the same. We tried to play through that pressure as we spoke pre-match about how Hibs are really well coached and have good international players. I’m pleased the boys managed to get the performance to go with the result.
“Some of the football was a joy to watch. We spoke about expectations before the game, and there’s loads of expectations on young players that fly around. Whether that’s their own personal expectations, or that we as a staff and a club place on them. Playing at Rangers, you’re expected to win, and it’s about how many times can you turn those expectations into reality and thankfully the boys did that.”
Rangers produced a controlled performance on the evening, offering Hibs very few sightings of goal while carrying a constant attacking threat going in the opposite direction.
There was also an appearance for 15-year-old Jack Wylie in the second half, replacing Greig Allen in the backline to help his side see the game out.
He continued: “Sometimes in youth football the result doesn’t tell the full story because of the way the game is played and there’s more turnovers given they’re still young and learning the game.
"I think if you add the full performance to the result, it’s really pleasing, however if we’re a little bit more clinical we could have had more goals. On the flipside, it’s great to get a clean sheet. We had Jack Wylie as a 2007-born player come in and play in the backline so for him it’s a big achievement.
“The biggest thing today was that we kept the ball. We know that if we keep the ball, the opposition can’t score. Today was a great day in that when we did turn the ball over, our structure behind the attack was excellent. The three that played at the back, Leyton [Grant], Kristian [Webster] and Greig [Allen] were comfortable in terms of controlling those moments and being really proactive in stopping danger coming off the back of that.”
