CRAIG MCPHERSON was pleased to progress after Rangers left it late to book their place in the last eight of the Sky Sports Cup.
The Light Blues were frustrated for long spells before eventually finding the breakthrough 13 minutes from time before going on to a claim a 3-0 away win over Dundee United this afternoon.
Speaking to RangersTV after the match, he commented: “First of all we are pleased to be in the next round of the cup, that is the objective when you play these games is to get through and obviously with us being the holders we want to try retain the trophy this season.
“The game itself, the first half Dundee United made it really difficult for us, they defended deep with numbers and we didn't quite have the quality to break them down.
“The second half changed and we had a lot of chances, a lot of opportunities, the goalkeeper has had a really good game to keep them in it. But we knew if we kept going and we created the chances that the goals would come, so pleased with the 3-0 win.”
The Gers were limited to few chances in the opening 45 minutes as McPherson spoke of the message to the players whilst also praising the impact of the goalscorers, with all three substitutes finding the target on the day.
He continued: “When we spoke at half time they knew that the bits of quality they needed around the box when you are playing against a low block, you have to be really smooth and your passing needs to be really good and the quality needs to be really good.
“We addressed it at half time, we came out in the second half and really dominated possession and created loads of opportunities so we knew if we kept at it the goals would come.
“You have got quality right throughout the squad. No matter the starting XI there is quality on the bench and we have got Jane and Megan coming back from long-term injury as well.
“There is real strength and depth and whatever XI you put out there is really good quality in it and when you can bring Katie, Kirsty and Brogan on, Megan and Mia as well.
“We knew we were replacing quality with quality so it must be good to play alongside them because they made a change in the second half to get the goals eventually and we got the win.”
The former player also praised the backline for remaining switched on defensively as they had to remain focused throughout at Foundation Park.
He added: “We were really good at that, I felt Kathy, Nic and Raff were concentrated on what we wanted to do to make sure we didn't have any defensive lapses.
“That gives you the platform to go and play and they go and join in the possession as well.
“You have got to make sure that defensively we are sound and with the quality we have we will create opportunities.”
