Daina Bourma On Balancing Full-time Training with Ramadan

DAINA Bourma has opened up on balancing full-time training with Ramadan after the Holy month of fasting has come to an end.

A member of what is a fantastically diverse Rangers side, the 21-year-old admits it was mentally and physically challenging as she would continue daily training unable to have any food or drink during daylight hours.

In an exclusive interview with RangersTV, Bourma said the first two weeks were the toughest as she adapted to fasting while continuing to train and play full-time with Gers involved in a busy Scottish Women’s Premier League schedule.

She said: “It was a bit challenging mentally and physically and it was really hard for me because I couldn't drink or eat for training so at times I was a bit low.

“In the morning it was ok but by the end of the day I started to feel tired again. For games when they were later on in the evening it was harder and I used to train in the morning.

“It was actually really tough but I got used to it. For the first two weeks it was really sunny and hot and I kept thinking I needed a drink but it was ok.”

Bourma praised the club, her teammates and her coaches for their understanding and support throughout the month, with the defender given a specially designed programme in order to balance both the importance of the Holy month, and also the rigours of being a professional athlete.

She continued: “It was funny because some of my teammates didn't understand the rules so I had to explain what I was doing and for what reason but it was nice because I explained to them how I was feeling and they were really understanding.

“They all said ‘I don't know how you do it’ but mentally and physically it was challenging but they were really really supportive.

“I feel ok now, it was hard again to get back into a routine again but it feels good to have breakfast in the morning!”
