The Gers came from behind twice to ensure a share of the spoils, with an own goal and a late spot-kick from Bailey Rice just rewards for the Light Blues’ overall display.
Speaking to RangersTV after the contest, the Gers B head coach commented: “It was a really high-level game.
“First and foremost, the energy within the game from both sides gave the game a certain feel. It was about trying to find a bit of calmness through the chaos; our lads tried to do that.
“I thought we had good spells of control, but the challenge will always be what happens at the end of that.
“Over the piece, I thought we had more chances than Bohemians, but we just need to be more clinical; from box to box, we’re always good and the group knows what it looks like, and we adapted formation today to challenge the players a little bit further.
“But the principles never change; that’s the key aspect of it. We need to get better in the penalty box, absolutely, and I’m frustrated at both of the goals we conceded.
“There were a lot of real positives, but equally a lot of experience to gain in terms of decision making and to make sure you get the result at the end of it if that’s what we want to judge it on.
“But I’m really pleased with the performance of the group in what I thought was a highly competitive game.”
Bohemians, who are in the midst of their pre-season preparations, provided a stern test in different phases of the game for a Gers side led from the front by 16-year-old Josh Gentles.
Rangers certainly found their groove in the second half and, by the end of an entertaining 90 minutes, were left wondering as to how the third goal had never arrived.
McCallum added: “I’m looking at some of the individual performances: I thought Cole McKinnon was excellent.
“I have labelled him there, but there were several others. His energy epitomised how we wanted to play, but allied to that, the quality that he showed and he assisted the first equalising goal.
“Others around that were also very good as well.
“That’s not to say we didn’t experience challenges, as we should have playing against a top League of Ireland team who are in the midst of their pre-season. But it was a really competitive game.
“As a senior team, [Bohemians] have a real desire and determination to defend their own goal. That was very evident, and it was up to us to find solutions. I think we need a bit more ruthlessness within the penalty box.
“When they did have the ball, I thought we controlled it very well up until around 70 minutes, but the latter part of the game became a bit more open; both teams had moments to counter-attack and win the game towards the end.”
