The B Team boss highlighted that it was key for the youngsters to remain patient and calm following Alloa’s early first goal.
McCallum spoke exclusively to RangersTV after this evenings win against Barry Ferguson’s side and said that they knew the fixture was going to be a tough challenge.
He said: “It was a good performance tonight, perhaps a slow start and Alloa began quicker than us. We haven’t played against many teams like Alloa so we knew coming into the game that it was going to be difficult.
“I thought it was a slow burner but once the game started to develop through, we became better.
“I thought out of possession as a unit, we were a little bit fragmented. We knew Alloa were going to have time on the ball and create opportunities, we knew we had to make important interceptions and saves.
“It wasn’t going to be easy, but I think that the lads have earned the opportunity to go to the next round.”
The head coach added that it was important for the squad to remain calm following Alloa’s early lead and their equaliser in the second half.
He continued: “We settled into the game and that was the key, and we found our rhythm. I thought in the second half our heads stayed focussed and didn’t let ourselves get too disappointed with not getting ourselves ahead where we probably could have.
“We showed a lot of character and personality, I think that it is a well-earned victory.”
McCallum continued by saying the B team are hungry to keep playing against squad’s that will test them.
He added: “We want to play against teams at the highest possible level that we can. We were delighted to take on Alloa, we knew that they were a good team and Cove Rangers will bring similar challenges, and we want those challenges as it continues to test our players.
“We have a few games before we reach that point and it’s important that we manage those ones first.”
