The Light Blues scored four times in a hugely impressive first half showing – powered by a superb brace from Arron Lyall – before Robbie Ure added his second of the evening and his side’s fifth to cap off a positive evening’s work in Dumbarton.
Speaking to RangersTV after the victory, McCallum praised the energy of his side that underpinned the Gers’ clinical showing: “It was an excellent performance.
"I thought in the first half that our energy made it really difficult for Broomhill to play. In our video analysis of them they come across as a team who want to play in a certain way and we made that really difficult for them.
“When we had the ball, the purpose we had in terms of coming together and playing in small spaces, then turning up the energy and playing through the lines, getting Arron Lyall and Ross McCausland in positions that really caused problems. Arron has scored two really good goals during that spell.
“I really enjoyed the first half, and I enjoyed the second half as well but we perhaps didn’t have control in key moments, with one or two turnovers that put us under a little bit of pressure that we felt we could have avoided. I thought over the course of the 90 minutes it was an excellent performance.”
Ure added another two goals to his tally for the season in the Lowland League, but there was also a pair of assists for Jack Harkness, while fellow full-back Robbie Fraser created the opening goal with a delicious right-footed cross.
He continued: “We challenged [the full-backs] on both sides of the pitch to be high, and to get into positions where we could get against their backline because we know they have the quality.
"It’s an area of the pitch that we want to get them into and we encouraged that today, we can see that they can cause problems.
“It’s one thing getting into those areas, but the quality has to be right and the part inside the penalty area has to be good as well. You look at the first goal, good ball from Robbie Fraser with his right foot.
"We’re asking Robbie Ure to be in those areas between the goals, get that first contact and make the goalkeeper work. Robbie has been working on that over the last few weeks and scored a couple of goals for Scotland U19s in a similar sort of way. He gets his two goals tonight, another from a cross from the right-hand side.
“Five goals is a good contribution. We always feel that we can do a little bit more because the opportunities were there, but over the course of the 90 minutes, debut for Findlay Curtis, excellent from Mackenzie Strachan in terms of finding control and rhythm as well.”
