David McCallum Praises Squad Performance

DAVID MCCALLUM praised his squad’s performance after their impressive win against Hammarby in their UEFA Youth League opener this evening.

The B Team boss believes that the youngsters were at another level tonight after a dominating victory against the Swedish side.

Speaking exclusively to the press after tonight’s winning performance, McCallum was thoroughly pleased with the way the Young Gers have kick started the competition.

He said: “It was an excellent performance tonight.

“You go into the game expecting a very tough match, Hammarby came in with a lot of energy and we set our boys up with that expectation.

"It was key that we asked our boys to go to a level that they [Hammarby] couldn’t get to. The quality from the squad tonight was really good.

“The boys are capable of dominating games. Hammarby are a difficult opposition, and we can’t underestimate the level that our boys reached tonight because Hammarby are a good team that we have beaten.”

McCallum highlighted the depth of quality in the team this evening and insisted that they are driving the boys for to be noticed by the first team. He added: “You can see what Ross [McCausland] has got in talent, two goals tonight that were top class but he’s not the only one.

“Everyone has that challenge to try and get to a level that makes the first team talk about them. We’re here to get them to that level that gets the first team staff to think of them and it’s up to that player to try and get ahead of who is already there. That’s not an easy challenge, it shouldn’t be when you’re at Rangers.”

The Head Coach added the benefit of playing in the Lowland League this season has had on the youngsters as they faced the Swedish side tonight and as they come up against tougher opposition. He continued: “We learn from every single game.

“Every team is a bit different because not every game that we have played in the Lowland League has been the same – there has been different variances and that’s good for them.

“They’re playing against season professionals who have played different levels of the game. Tonight’s fixture was another challenge as well.”
