Europa Draw: Gers Paired With Lyon, Sparta Praha & Brondby

THIS morning’s UEFA Europa League Group Stage draw has seen Rangers placed in Group A along with Olympique Lyonnais of France, Sparta Praha of Czech Republic and Brondby of Denmark.

Lyon are no strangers to the Light Blues, with Gers earning one of the most famous European results against the French side back in 2007, winning 3-0 at their previous Stade Gerland home.

Indeed, Steven Gerrard’s men faced them in pre-season last year, winning 2-0 in their tremendous new Groupama Stadium.

They finished fourth in last season’s Ligue 1, while this season, they have picked up two points from their opening three matches.

Sparta Prague last visited Ibrox back in the 1991/92 European Cup – trailing 1-0, Gers won 2-1 thanks to a Stuart McCall double, but fell out of the competition on the old away goals rule.

They were second in last year’s Czech First League, and have four wins and a draw from their first five matches this season.

Brondby, however, are a new name for Gers. The Danish champions were defeated by RB Salzburg in the Champions League play-off round.

That was their first title since 2004-05, but this season, their defence has seen them collect four points from four draws in their opening six games.

Fixture dates are as follows, and the schedule of matches will be confirmed later today…

  • Matchday Two – 30 September

  • Matchday Three – 21 October
