Goals either side of half-time from Jermain Defoe and Scott Arfield secured the win over Ross County at Ibrox tonight – with Gerrard hoping it sparks his players off on another run of results.
He told RangersTV: “It’s job done and it is a positive performance – obviously a lot better than the weekend. The players have listened over the last couple of days and we have got a reaction.
“But, we are back on the horse and hopefully it is the start of another big run.”
Defoe was stretchered off, unfortunately, just by the hour mark, and Gerrard updated: “Let’s talk about his contribution first – I thought his first goal was outstanding – typical Defoe swivelling in the box and that important breakthrough for us.
“And then the flick for the second goal is magical. So that makes it even more disappointing that you see him go off on a stretcher.
“If it’s an injury which is more than two to three weeks, we’ve got a problem in that area, so it might affect what we might do in the next two or three days.”
Scott Arfield took home the ‘Man of the Match’ prize tonight, with Gerrard thrilled with his contribution against the Staggies.
The boss said: “I thought he was excellent when he came on at Hearts and that was more like the type of performance we needed across the pitch.
“Scott has built on that, again with a great run and what we have been working on in training – trying to overload the centre-halves with forward runs and clever play.
Matt Polster too came in for a starting league debut at right-back, with Gerrard continuing: “I think he’s feeling that in there as he has ice in a couple of places! So we will have to get him rested and recovered.
“I am pleased for him as he works really, really hard every single day. He is a good person around the place so he deserved an opportunity and I felt it was a positive performance from him as well.”
And, Alfredo Morelos returned from the bench after his lay-off, with Gerrard adding: “He has had a suspension and he has had a small muscle problem which obviously contributed to the amount of minutes he got tonight.
“He’s obviously had an off-field incident which is now a police investigation, so look, he has had a bit of an unusual few weeks and hopefully that little cameo tonight will help him in the coming weeks.
“We certainly need him now with Jermain out and he is going to have to be ready come the weekend.”
