The Light Blues return to Scottish Premiership action on the back of the international break and the manager is expecting a tough test for his players.
Speaking to the media this afternoon, he said: “Callum [Davidson] has proved he is a top coach and a real good manager. He has had instant success and that is down to how he sets his team up and how organised they are.
“His players give him real honesty and are prepared to put their bodies on the line and within that they have got some talented lads as well who can hurt you and they try and force mistakes.
“Without a doubt going to a place like St Johnstone we know we have to be really at it and at our best to get the three points.”
Gerrard will be back in the dugout in Perth and will also see a number of players return to the squad after completing self-isolation as he praised the way the players, staff and club have come together over a challenging past few weeks.
He continued: “I came here to manage from the sidelines and I feel like I can be a bigger help from the side and I like to be hands on, I could still obviously contribute in terms of the preparation and picking the team but to do that remotely can be frustrating.
“For me the most pleasing thing and what made me the most proud was how we all stuck together during a challenging time.
“It wasn't just me that was missing, there were a few other staff members and some players were ruled out as well and we were really tested to the maximum but I thought Michael and Gary stepped forward tremendously well and the players followed.
“From the outside looking in it showed the strength of us as a club that we could deal with adversity when we were pushed to the maximum.”
