Gerrard Delighted With Win

RANGERS opened up their Ibrox league campaign with three points this afternoon to leave boss Steven Gerrard delighted.

The Light Blues played some outstanding football at times and could well have added to the three goals they netted against St Mirren this afternoon.

Speaking live on RangersTV’s coverage of the match, Gerrard’s biggest positives were: "A clean sheet, three important points and a real, positive all-round display. I thought we were really dominant, certainly in the first half.

"I said to them at half time, 'could we be a little bit less cute around the box' as we were trying to score the perfect goal.

"But we kept forcing the issue and we got the breakthrough with the own-goal, but again, it is a fantastic cross and we were putting St Mirren under pressure.

"But I was really pleased with the first half and it was just about getting that second goal and really sucking the life out of St Mirren and we did that. It came at a good time for us and we finished the game off in style.

"To get ultra-critical, I want more goals - I think the display and our style deserved more goals but you've got to give St Mirren credit - they are an organised team.

"Their manager has been praising them all week because of how well they've started the season and how organised they are, so I've got to credit my boys as we were set a challenge today and we passed it with flying colours.

"I think our build-up play was really strong and really good. We were getting into the right areas but sometimes, we tried to score the perfect goal.

"We were looking for that perfect combination or that perfect bit of magic, whereas sometimes you just don't need to complicate it - shoot more, cross more and put it into dangerous areas and you get rewards.

"We certainly did that from a set-piece."

Gerrard used all five of the replacements available to him from the bench today, including handing new striker Cedric Itten a debut.

He continued: "We are Rangers and Rangers should have strength in-depth and good players and good reserve players and good squad players.

"You should, as a manager, be able to rest players and be able to bring in the same quality because we are a big football club and we are Rangers.

"So I am delighted with the strength in depth we have got at the moment. We have started the season really well with six points out of six, but we need to recover now and get ready to try and find the same kind of display on Wednesday night."

The boss was also thrilled with Alfredo Morelos’ contribution, the Colombian netting twice and setting up the other in the comfortable win.

Gerrard added: "I wanted a bit more from him in midweek. We spoke about that, but he has certainly responded today.

"I think domestically, his two performances have been fine and I thought he was decent at Aberdeen.

"He could have been a little bit better, if you like, in-terms of taking his chances and getting shots off, but today I thought his all-round performance was good and more-often than not, when you have got his talent and you play well, your numbers will come and they came today.

"I'm pleased with his all-round contribution."
