Gerrard Expecting A Different Challenge

STEVEN Gerrard feels Rangers will need to be ready to adapt on Sunday as they prepare to face Motherwell at Fir Park.

The Gers boss is expecting a different challenge from December’s 3-1 victory with the Lanarkshire side welcoming new manager Graham Alexander but Gerrard says his focus continues to be on Rangers.

Speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference, he said: “We expect a tough challenge, we will certainly respect a new manager going in and things will be slightly different.

“We have to be ready to adapt to whatever is thrown at us but our focus and the majority of our preparation has been on us, where we are at and what we have to do to try and get the three points.

“It is certainly something we are looking forward to going down to Fir Park and we are looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“A manager always goes in and tries to put his own stamp on things. Normally you get a bit of a bounce and a boost and you are galvanised.

“I am sure they will be trying to do all they can to derail us and try and be the first team to beat us from a league point of view this season.”

The manager provided an injury update, with welcome news that Ryan Jack is nearing a return.

The midfielder has been side-lined with a knee injury since late November but is now back training with the squad.

Gerrard said: “Ryan had his first full session yesterday. We will make a decision today on whether he is involved against Motherwell but that might be one we have to be patient with.

“He is back in the group and for sure he will be involved next week but we will see how he looks this morning before we make the decision.

“We have always tried to monitor the load of all the players. Some players are very robust and can churn out games no problem and recover really quickly, some players need a little bit more attention in terms of recovery and offloading at the right times.

“Ryan is a difficult one because he is so important, his consistency levels have been superb so it is difficult because you want him in the team as much as possible and he wants to be in the team as much as possible.

“He does need looking after differently to some other players and it is something that we will try and keep and eye on and try to keep him available as much as we can because he is so important for both club and country - especially at this stage.”

Gerrard said Kemar Roofe was expected to resume full training next week, with Scott Arfield also stepping up his injury rehab with gym work.

George Edmundson is set to miss 3 to 4 weeks after a small procedure and Nikola Katic is progressing well after his surgery.
