The club’s 39-year-old goalkeeper has been in sparkling form this season, pulling off so many incredible saves and being part of a defensive unit which has conceded just 13 league goals prior to tomorrow’s final Scottish Premiership fixture against Aberdeen at Ibrox.
While the Light Blues have had to many top performers over the past 10 months, Gerrard can see why McGregor – who signed a new deal until 2022 last month – has been rewarded for his efforts.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, the Gers boss said: "Yeah, 100 per cent. I think there were other names that would have been in the running from our point of view and we have had some real consistent performers across the season, but I can't argue against Greegsy.
“He has been magnificent for me and he has put in some world class performances. Some of the saves I have seen him make this season I haven’t seen before, so thoroughly deserved and I'm really pleased for him.”
Gerrard, who was also named the 2020/21 Scottish Football Writers’ Manager of the Year earlier this week, admits he is ‘flattered’ to receive two awards at the end of what has been a stunning season for the club.
He added: “From my point of view it's been a brilliant week personally. Obviously to receive this award on the back of the one I received a few days ago is really humbling and flattering and I'm pleased.
“But I'm more pleased for my players and I think the next 24 hours for me is about stepping back and seeing them and being really proud of what they have achieved because they have given me absolutely everything.
“If you receive individual accolades along way I'm really grateful, I'll cherish them and they will go alongside the ones that I achieved as a player. But for me this is a team game and it's very much about what we can achieve as a group, and tomorrow's prize is the one I'm really excited about."
