The 24-year-old, who signed from Celtic on a one-year deal, is hoping the Gers can help create more opportunities for female players in the country.
She said: “It is hugely exciting, this league has been won 13 times by Glasgow City so to have a club as big as Rangers invest and show that commitment to the women’s side is massive.
“It is exciting to potentially be part of something that is maybe going to change the culture of this country and encourage other teams to help promote a more competitive league and promote more opportunities for females in the game so for me it is hugely exciting.”
Cunningham is the second goalkeeper to sign in this transfer window, after Jenna Fife joined last week.
She is looking forward to working with Fife, and hopes to give head coach Gregory Vignal a decision to make when it comes to his starting goalkeeper.
She continued: “Jenna is such a nice girl and a great goalkeeper. Some people might be put off by that but I think competition is key if you want to get the best out of yourself.
“I get on really well with Jenna so I think it will be a really good working relationship, good laugh so that always helps as well and I am looking forward to that.
“I’m hoping to get myself built into the team well, to come back and train strong and give Greg a decision to make on who is going to be starting goalkeeper.”
Cunningham is looking forward to seeing how the new-look Rangers squad will play together, and can’t wait to get started.
She added:
“It is also nice having people in the same boat as you that are coming in and are doing something new for the first time.
“Obviously professionalism has never really been seen in this country so it will be interesting to see how especially at this club we can cope with all the new faces and all the new styles that are potentially coming in it is just exciting and it’ll be good to work alongside some really good quality players.
In the long-term, the goalkeeper hopes the changes at Rangers can help encourage young players to stay in Scotland to play their football.
She explained: “It is such a new and fresh prospect that is happening, I am hoping that this is just the start.
“It has always been a kind of pass on, you come through the league and then you go to another league but we want to try and retain good players here.
“Hopefully it will make the league a little bit better and more competitive to hold on to the good players that we have got coming through.”
