The B team assistant coach reflected on this afternoon’s win at the Islecroft Stadium and gave a breakdown of the challenges faced in each half.
Speaking exclusively to RangersTV following the squad’s away victory, he said: “We were really pleased with the first half performance, when you look at the level of intensity, speed of game, and goals – it was a really strong first half performance.
“When you go into a 4-0 match, the second half can always be slightly different, that’s the bit we try and place on the players as well on how we can continue the first half performance into the second. We were pleased overall with the majority of the game.
“You’ve got to give credit to the opposition, Dalbeattie came out and had a go. They were playing in our final third for a long period of time, ultimately from that they went and got the goals. We were happy with the reaction after the goal as well, we created more chances to help put the game to bed. Overall, we’re pleased with the second half performance.
“Credit to the players, they never turned it down and went back to it to go again and get the fifth goal to finish it off.
“It’s something that you can label this group of players are good at, they don’t change up how they play. They’ll go after it and still have majority of possession on the ball and create chances, sometimes you need to adapt to what the game is. We adapted to the opening of the second half and weathered the storm to get back, that comes with age and experience.”
Gilmour looked ahead to Tuesday evening’s SPFL Trust Trophy fixture against Dumbarton and emphasised that the squad will be presented with a different type of challenge.
He added: “Momentum is key. It’s a brand-new game and competition, Dumbarton will be a different challenge – they’re going well in the league at the moment.
“A lot of these lads have been experienced in this type of game, we’re under no illusion that it will be a tough challenge, but one that we want to bounce into and have a clear impact on the game to get the next round.”
