Gilmour Praises Rangers Performance

BRIAN Gilmour praised the performance of Rangers under-19’s this evening as they progressed to the play-off round of the UEFA Youth League.

A 3-0 victory in Dumbarton saw the young Gers continue their European journey with a 7-2 aggregate win over Bulgarian champions Septemvri Sofia.

The Light Blues coach was delighted with the way the players dealt with the challenging conditions at a windy Dumbarton Stadium.

Speaking to RangersTV at full time, he said: “We are really pleased to be in the next round, that was the task that we set out at the beginning. If you look at the game tonight it was difficult to play in the conditions and I think that was apparent in terms of the wind and rain at times.

“It was really challenging so I think it was a game of two different halves, if you look at the first-half we were really up against it in terms of the conditions but second half I thought we came out and we put a lot more forward pressure on them.

“The weather can be unpredictable and you have to deal with the balls into the box so a real credit to them in the first-half especially and to go and keep a clean sheet is really pleasing.

“When the first goal came I thought we went up a notch and we created more and more chances so to then go and step it up again and get another two goals it was a really pleasing night.”

Rangers are now in the hat for next week’s draw which will see a home tie against one of the second-placed teams in the group stage of the competition.

Gilmour continued: “The draw is going to be exciting, it is a home tie as well which is pleasing for us that we get to go and test ourselves at home against new opposition.

“The players are really focussed, we don’t want just one more game and we would like to go as far as we can in the competition and ultimately test ourselves against the best out there in Europe in their age group.”
