Robbie Ure struck deep into stoppage time to deliver three points for the young Gers after the forward’s early opener was cancelled out midway through the second half by Lewis Turner from the penalty spot.
Speaking to RangersTV after the victory, Gilmour reflected on the side’s performance: “We’re pleased with the outcome. If you go back to the first half performance, I thought there was some good stuff in there.
“We challenged the boys at half time if we actually worked the penalty box and goalkeeper enough. We had a few chances that we could have put away and added to the scoreline. The game was always going to be live and open when it sits at 1-0. Then you look at Gretna coming back into the game with the penalty, and it’s taken us to the last very last second to go and get the goal that ultimately gives us the victory.
“The bits that we look at is the quality and outcome, and what those look like, and it was probably below the normal level that we’ve saw from these lads in the last little while. The important bit is to continue trying to play the game, where you’re trying to get to, how you’re going to try and get into the penalty box and work the goalkeeper by trying not to be too frantic and force things that aren’t there. Fair play to the boys, they’ve stuck in to what it looks like, and we’ve got the goal which is pleasing in the last minute to get the victory.”
Rangers had opportunities to double their advantage in the first half after Ure’s opener in the 10th minute, but they had to wait until stoppage time to secure their victory after Gretna grew into the match after the interval.
Gilmour continued: “There were some technical errors when you look at it. We talk about the speed going up or down in the game, and trying to draw your opponents into positions and move them. We had small moments of control where we let that go, but ultimately we managed to get it back and get the rhythm.
“You look at Gretna as well and it changed up, they’ve had something to hold onto with the equalising goal. It becomes that bit more difficult. That’s the key point, to continue in that path you’re going down and ultimately work a chance and it’s came in the last second of the game.”
