Leanne Crichton Encouraged by Confidence and Competition In Squad

HEAD Coach Leanne Crichton believes the squad are in a good place ahead of the weekend’s Sky Sports Cup semi-final.

The Light Blues are currently unbeaten in their last seven outings, including six wins, as they target a place in the showpiece final for a fourth season running.

Speaking to RangersTV ahead of the Old Firm clash at Broadwood, she commented: “Belief in the squad? As good as it's been, that is the only comparison I have got.

“Obviously, I have only been here since the summer, and not knowing what that feel-good factor would have been like last season.

“If I compare it to other environments that I have been part of in my career, this is one of the best.

“That is the strength of the squad just now, and that is coming from building those relationships throughout the season.

“Obviously, the confidence and results come from winning games and getting those results and certainly not losing.

“The Glasgow City game was another massive performance for us in the sense that you have gone behind and then you go and equalise so late on but there is a belief and a confidence in the group that regardless of the time on the clock, we know we can get out of games what we want and what we deserve.

“Sunday against Celtic gives us another really good opportunity to go and do that against a side that we have got good experiences to go and back reference and good performances and results to lean on.”

Rangers have welcomed several injury absentees back into the squad in recent outings, with Leah Eddie gaining minutes and Kathy Hill named back on the bench at the weekend, as Crichton highlighted the importance of key players returning.

She continued: “It is great, it is really difficult to put into words the quality that they bring.

“Not just on the pitch, obviously, they give us that strength and depth, real leadership and experience on the pitch, but they give us that off it as well.

“It is the only way that you can compete, it is the only way that you can win and be successful, by being able to create that as often as you possibly can.

“Every player has played their part this season, but the real frustration has been the number of times and days that we have lost key players through injury.

“It only feels like now there is real light at the end of the tunnel, and I probably said that earlier in the season when I felt we got to a poin,t then we had another number of setbacks.

“Players who missed some key minutes. Leah has been able to ramp up over the last number of weeks, which has been great for us.

“Kathy came into the matchday squad against Glasgow City, although she didn't get on the pitch, but she is very much ready and raring to go, so we hope another full week of training for her will leave her better placed, certainly heading into this next fixture for us.

“Once we have got her back and Leah and the others that are on the coattails.

“When they are back, we want them to be back for good, so we don't want them to be dropping in and out, so there is no need to force and rush these players because we are not quite at that critical stage of the season just yet.”

On the other hand, the former Scotland international has given supporters an update on the players who are currently on the sidelines, with the hopes of having the group back together for the final parts of the season.

She added: “Brogan [Hay] is probably the biggest frustration and disappointment for her, because she started the season exceptionally well, and obviously we have been without her now for well over 100 days.

“I think it has been something quite considerable with a number of setbacks along the way.

“She has really had to persevere, but thankfully for her, the light is definitely there now.

She is now integrated with the full squad, and we will look to build her training minutes over the next number of weeks, with the ambition to have her cleared certainly before the next international window.

“Lizzie [Arnot] and Sarah [Ewens] are certainly two longer-term ones, but both are back on the pitch and have moved their rehab from being gym-based and certainly off feet; they are now on the pitch and building, but it will be a fair bit of time before either of them is match fit and raring to go.

“Just to have them back in amongst the group and to see them out on the pitch at the same types of times now that the main training squad are there, that just gives everybody a lift as well because ultimately it is your friends and teammates as well that you feel so disappointed for.

“The feel-good factor around the group is really good, and hopefully by the split we will have pretty much the full squad back fit and available.”
