After Aiden McCallion and Zebedee Lawson scored inside two minutes just shy of the hour mark, the young Gers stretched their advantage when right full-back Ben Hutton drove low into the bottom corner from a Cameron Fernie lay-off and left full-back Ashton Scally finished in off the post in stoppage time.
Both players were tireless on the flanks all evening, with the result moving the side three points clear at the top of the CAS Elite League, albeit having played two more games than Hibernian and St. Mirren.
Speaking to RangersTV after the win, Thomson commented: “The style of play that we have, every time we receive the ball we’re looking to play through and stay through, and getting both full-backs to join in.
“Again, we had a lot of the ball and dominated the game, but what was evident tonight was that we were more assured in terms of our defensive duties.
“Our structure was a bit better, which allowed us to gain that total control of the game, and in the second half we got the four goals, which was pleasing.
“What was the message at half-time? We spoke about the last thing that you do with the ball is how you’re judged.
“We needed to take care of the ball and to make sure we were making the right choices at the right times.
“We pointed that out to them, and it wasn’t so much tactical but more about their personal involvement in the game.”
Goalkeeper Rydnn McGuire returned between the posts, helping the side keep a well-earned clean sheet after defeats to St. Mirren and Hibernian recently in League Cup action.
The 17-year-old pulled off a vital save in the first-half with the scoreline level, offering the last line of defence behind a composed central defensive pairing of Conor Owen and James Reid.
Thomson continued: “Rydnn has been involved with the first-team, and it has shown in his confidence and manner.
“The way he portrays himself around the group is really good. He’s only 17, but he acts like a 26-year-old. It’s great for the group to see the way he prepares for the game.
Next up for the young side is a Glasgow Cup semi-final against Clyde.
It provides a detour from the conclusion of the league campaign for Rangers, who are still to face St. Mirren, Dundee United and Celtic with ambitions of getting their hands on silverware.
For Thomson, the demand is clear, adding: “We spoke about pressure at the club, but it’s one that you want to welcome.
“The group know that they must win their three final league games, and we also have a cup semi-final to play.”
