The Light Blues went one down inside a minute against Bo’ness United before first-half strikes from Paul Nsio, Archie Stevens and Findlay Curtis helped them on their way to victory in their first competitive outing of the season.
Speaking to RangersTV after the game, the assistant coach was pleased with the performance after overcoming their start to the match.
He said: “That is what it is about is getting to the next round, giving the guys the opportunity to go and play against some better opposition.
“We have got Clyde in the next round but it was a good performance.
“Especially after the start of the game where we found ourselves again 1-0 down, but again fantastic resilience shown by the boys and I think some of the football that they played really impacted on the game and created the chances that we got.
“There is an enthusiasm and endeavour about the side, but we know that when we get the ball down and we play like we can play we are a real handful.”
The former Rangers women’s head coach spoke on how tonight’s match will further help the development of the youthful Gers side, coming up against another men’s first team having faced Larne at the weekend.
He continued: “If we look at the group that is in this year there are a lot of Under-18 football players who were playing Under-18's last year.
“Again it is a good progression in their development to get onto this stage. Playing at a stadium, against tough opponents and managing to progress into the next round.”
Thomson wants the team to now overcome their opposition in round two as they prepare to take on League Two side Clyde, with the Light Blues targeting a deep run in the competition having reached the last 16 stage last season.
He added: “It is all about challenges and if they are going to equip themselves to be a part of a first-team or round about the first team they have got to put themselves into the position where they are not just competing against these teams, but they actually beating these teams and showing that they are well capable of doing it.”
