Malky Thomson: Squad Grabbed The Opportunity

MALKY THOMSON says he’s pleased that his Rangers B players are grabbing the opportunities in front of them after today’s 3-2 triumph over Huddersfield Town.

It was another young Gers B side – populated heavily with 2007-born players – with the added experience of Ianis Hagi, who scored twice, in midfield.

Speaking to RangersTV after the victory, Thomson commented: “In the end, it’s about winning and we’re here to compete in every game.

“I thought the boys who finished the game could have been our starting team, and they certainly showed an appetite and belief.

“We didn’t have the quality in the first half that we did have in the second half.

“When you’re at Rangers and you don’t the start the game, you certainly get the opportunity to go on and make the difference.

“We saw that in all the subs, from the younger players to the more experienced ones.

“Leyton Grant has played out of position, but we asked him to go and do a job in the central midfield area. It wasn’t really about his contribution on the ball, but rather his organisation skills which came through.

“There are a lot of parts to the players that we’re developing during the week in order for them to become a first-team contender for Rangers.”

The Gers scored first in the contest when Findlay Curtis rifled home from the edge of the penalty area.

However, the Terriers turned the game on its head before the half-time interval to leave Rangers with it all to do in the second period.

An improved second half showing from the Light Blues proved the difference.

Thomson added: “We handled the ball better in the second half than we did in the first half.

“All too often we failed to do the basics that we have been doing, but they got a gentle reminder about that.

“We certainly came out in the second half, created numerous chances, and showed real quality for the two goals which eventually won the game.

“The B Team is there primarily to service the first-team and their needs. We’re never going to be in a position where we have a regular starting lineup, and it’s there to give players opportunities.

“It’s important when you get the jersey and you’re in the starting lineup that you give a good account of yourself.”
