Findlay Curtis, who spent a significant portion of pre-season with the first-team, stole the headlines as the 18-year-old netted twice in the first-half.
The Light Blues ran out eventual 4-3 winners over their English opponents, with Josh Gentles and Alex Lowry netting either side of the half-time interval.
Speaking to RangersTV after the triumph, Thomson believes players are benefitting from their first-team training opportunities: “It’s definitely benefitted the players.
“The one thing that we do know about this group is that they’re all talented boys.
“They can handle the ball and play, and we were faced with a big and strong team who went back to front early.
“There are a lot of areas to pick up on as a coaching staff heading into later this week.”
The young Gers netted three times in the first half, yet they trudged in at the interval level after a Middlesbrough fightback.
Rangers regained control after the interval, keeping their patience until the very end when Lowry struck from the penalty spot with less than ten minutes remaining.
Thomson added: “It was a really entertaining game. It was a funny game in the sense that were 2-0 up and in control, but we gave away two goals, the opposition got back into the game, and we found ourselves going in at half-time at 3-3.
“There are areas where we can look at in terms of the backline’s position.
“When we’re together and playing as a unit then we’re a strong back four, but it’s about how you regroup as a unit when the opposition hit on the counter and play forward quickly.
“We had some first-team experience in alongside some of the younger players which is only going to be beneficial for the future.”
