The 3-1 defeat to Aberdeen on 30 September 2023 brought to an end a nine-match unbeaten streak in league matches between the sides at Ibrox, the second best run without defeat that Rangers have enjoyed in the fixture since the war, although some way short of the 39 home league games between February 1992 and December 2016 in which the Light Blues recorded 30 victories, nine draws and no losses.

The goal scored by James Tavernier in the League Cup final in December was his 14th in all competitions against Aberdeen and means that, in addition to being the all-time leading scorer for Rangers in league matches with 13 goals, he now joins Ally McCoist and Derek Johnstone as top scorer in all competitive matches against the Dons.
Since taking over as Rangers manager in late October, Philippe Clement has already led his team to league victories against nine of the other 11 teams in the league. Aberdeen are one of the exceptions, having drawn 1-1 in the most recent league game played at Pittodrie in November, although the Belgian did guide the club to the League Cup victory over the Dons in December.
