Goals from Arron Lyall and Juan Alegria saw a strong away performance from the Young Gers as they travelled to Alloa in their league campaign match against David Gormley’s side.
David McCallum made just two changes to his squad following last week’s convincing victory against Gretna 2008, with Jay Hogarth replacing Lewis Budinauckas in goals.
Adam Devine, Johnly Yfeko, Robbie Fraser and Kyle McClelland were in the backline.
Charlie McCann stepped into the midfield to join Arron Lyall and Cole McKinnon with Juan Alegria, Kane Ritchie-Hosler and Ross McCausland up front for the Light Blues.
The game started at an intense pace from the referee’s first whistle, with both sides looking to take the ascendency early on. It was Broomhill however who threatened the Light Blues backline in the early stages with a few dangerous opportunities on goal, but none came to any real harm for the youngsters.
Rangers looked to quickly reverse the flow of play and began to drive towards the Broomhill goal, with Arron Lyall breaking the deadlock on the ten-minute mark. Ross McCausland made a critical interception from within his own half before switching play to Cole McKinnon who deftly battled past a few dark blue shirts. The youngster managed to break away and delivered a sensational cross from the halfway line to Lyall who sent a powerful low shot effort past Broomhill’s Stephen Barr.
Gormely’s side almost struck back immediately after Darren Smith hit the post with a dangerous strike on goal. The game continued to ebb and flow after this, with both sides pushing forward.
Broomhill did well to work their way into the Rangers box, and past the Gers backline following several one-touch passes before Josh Cooper cut the ball back into the box, but McKinnon made a terrific interception to clear the danger.
McCallum’s side thereafter held most of the play and possession as the game headed towards the interval and despite several lovely moves, the first half ended with a single goal lead to the visitors.
Both teams started in a similar lively fashion in the second half as they looked to seize control of the game.
The Gers created some lovely build-up play to advance into the Broomhill box, with Juan Alegria dropping the ball to Lyall within a congested penalty area, the youngster sent a ferocious strike towards the back of the net, but Barr made a fantastic and crucial save.
Barr was in action not long after when the ball then fell to McCausland at the edge of the box. The youngster worked his way through the backline to get another shot on target, but the Broomhill keeper pulled off another important block to prevent the Gers from doubling their lead.
The Gers pressure resulted in a great goal from Juan Alegria who netted the second on 70 minutes after great build-up play from the visitors. Adam Devine executed a strong shot towards the goal, with Barr managing to get a hand to it, but the ball fell towards the back post and an on-running Alegria headed it past the keeper.
Broomhill picked up their pace in the latter part of the game and managed to thread their way into dangerous positions in the Gers box. Jay Hogarth made some important saves to maintain a clean sheet, but the home side did well to nearly get a goal back. A Broomhill player picked the ball up after Hogarth’s initial save and sent a threatening strike towards the goal, but it rattled off the crossbar.
Following this opportunity, Tony Weston drove down the left side to Barr in goal, he cut back from the back post to shake off a defender to get some space to get his strike away, but the keeper collected his effort.
