Match Report: Rangers 2-0 Hibernian

RANGERS claimed another Scottish Premiership victory this evening, defeating Hibernian 2-0 at Ibrox.

A first-half James Tavernier penalty was followed by a super Alfredo Morelos goal in the second half to ensure the Light Blues took the three points.

Manager Gio van Bronckhorst named one change to his side for this evening’s Scottish Premiership match with Hibs here at Ibrox.

From the team which so impressively came through 5-0 against Hearts on Sunday, only the injured Ryan Jack, who was hurt in a tackle, missed out, with his place taken by Glen Kamara.

That meant it was a back five of Allan McGregor in goal with captain James Tavernier, Connor Goldson, Leon Balogun and Calvin Bassey in front of him.

John Lundstram was joined in the middle of the park by Kamara and Joe Aribo, with Ryan Kent and Scott Arfield again providing the support to Alfredo Morelos.

There was a first bench appearance for Mateusz Zukowski, and he was joined there by Jon McLaughlin, Borna Barisic, Steven Davis, Aaron Ramsey, James Sands, Amad, Kemar Roofe and Fashion Jr.

Rangers began the game at a good tempo, and on Ryan Kent’s first foray forward on the four-minute park, Paul McGinn came through him as he entered the area with referee Nick Walsh awarding the clear penalty.

James Tavernier waited for Matt Macey to move to his right before smashing it left to hand the Light Blues the early lead they craved.

It was almost another two minutes later with a superb Tavernier cross from away deep on the right being volleyed wide by Arfield as he burst into the area to meet the ball 15-yards out from the target.

Morelos tested Macey with a dipping effort from outside the box, while Arfield glanced a header over from a Tavernier delivery.

Tavernier had another effort on the half volley from 25-yards go just wide, while Morelos sent one wide on the turn as the weather really closed in around Ibrox with near-blizzard conditions as the first half progressed.

Gers began the second half on top once again, and they moved two to the good on 57 minutes through that man Alfredo Morelos’ 16th of the season.

He broke the offside trap on the end of a super Tavernier ball and as he entered the area, blasted high over Macey and into the roof of the net.

Macey made a super save to prevent Morelos netting again from a cute front-post lob, while Josh Doig blocked on the line to deny Kent.

Kent had another effort go just wide of the far post, but 2-0 is how it was to finish with a trip to Annan to come next for Gers in the Scottish Cup.
