Match Report: Rangers 4-0 Hamilton

A DOMINANT display saw Rangers pick up three points in the Park’s Motor Group SWPL this evening with a 4-0 victory over Hamilton.

A first-half double from Kayla McCoy and a Zoe Ness header had Rangers 3-0 up at the break, before Kirsty Howat marked her return from injury by adding a fourth in the second-half.

Malky Thomson named five changes to his side from Sunday’s victory over Glasgow City with goalkeeper Megan Cunningham coming in to replace the suspended Jenna Fife, while Janni Arnth, Brogan Hay, Zoe Ness and Kayla McCoy also came into the starting XI.

Rangers started bright in the opening minutes, with Brogan Hay causing problems down the right wing, before a corner saw Tess Middag head just wide of the target.

The early pressure paid off as Rangers opened the scoring with six minutes on the clock. Hay again broke on the right before picking out Kayla McCoy with an inviting delivery and the striker made no mistake in turning it behind to give the Light Blues the early lead.

Nicola Docherty, who captained Gers this evening, was next to try an effort from distance but it drifted just over the bar, before Lizzie Arnot’s low drilled shot was held by Jennifer Currie in the Hamilton goal.

It was one-way traffic at Rangers Training Centre and the Light Blues made it 2-0 in the 20th minute. Lizzie Arnot whipped a corner into the box, which met Zoe Ness at the front post and she headed beyond Currie.

Two minutes later Rangers further extended their advantage after fantastic build-up play from Brogan Hay. The winger, who had been causing problems for the visitors all evening, skipped beyond two defenders before picking out Kayla McCoy in the box and the Jamaica international fired the ball into the back of the net for her second of the evening.

Nicola Docherty had a powerful shot held by Currie as Rangers continued to pile the pressure on Hamilton.

Brogan Hay almost had a goal of her own before the break as a cross from the right veered towards goal and caught Hamilton keeper Jennifer Currie off-guard but it bounced back off the crossbar to keep the score 3-0 at half-time.

Malky Thomson made two changes to his side at half-time with captain Brianna Westrup coming on in place of Chantelle Swaby, while Zoe Ness was replaced by Megan Bell.

Bell was straight into the action as she took a touch into the box early in the second-half before getting a shot away at goal but it was held comfortably by Jennifer Currie.

Rangers started the second-half in the same manner as the first as Hay again created space on the right before finding McCoy in the box but Currie managed to deny the striker her hat-trick.

There was a warm applause at Rangers Training Centre for Kirsty Howat as she replaced Kayla McCoy and entered the field for the first time in 10 months having suffered an ACL injury in April last year.

It was a perfect return for Howat as she got herself on the scoresheet with 15 minutes of the match remaining. Lizzie Arnot’s shot was blocked by Jennifer Currie and Howat was alert to the rebound to fire the ball into the back of the net.

Rangers were continuing to threaten as Janni Arnth hit the crossbar with an effort from a Lizzie Arnot corner, before Jane Ross saw a long-range shot go just over the bar.

In the final minute of the match, Brogan Hay was denied a goal as Currie got a hand to a powerful strike to tip it over the bar for a corner.
