Abdallah Sima netted the winner against the Spanish side to get the Europa League group stage off to the perfect start and Matthew hopes the squad can take confidence from that moving forward.
He reckons the patience shown by the players and fans helped make it another special Ibrox night, with the club’s record now standing at 23 wins, six draws and just three defeats at home in Europe since 2017.
He said: “It’s a massive result. Ibrox is a fantastic environment, a challenging one at times as the fans want to be entertained.
“The players are learning the style of play, where we want to be patient on the ball and we did that very well in the second half against Betis.
“The players knew Betis would have moments in the game as they are a good team, but they kept believing in the style and we did that well.
“Once we settled down, we were very good and we showed how important set-plays can be for us with the winning goal.
“The character the boys showed as well was fantastic and when you look back at the goal, how many players we had in the six-yard box wanting the first ball and then the second?
“It was a great save from Kemar’s shot but we managed to put it away and it was an outstanding goal.
“Thursday was the first of four home games, if we show the right character then the results will hopefully take care of themselves.”
Motherwell are the next visitors to Ibrox tomorrow, after an impressive start to the new season.
Michael Beale’s side can go above the Steelmen with a victory and while Matthew knows it won’t be easy, he is looking to make it three wins on the spin.
Speaking exclusively to the Rangers website, he added: “Motherwell are going well so it will be a tough game.
“Stuart Kettlewell has built a good side there despite losing his main striker Kevin van Veen in the summer. He was a big player for them last season, but we are looking forward to an exciting game.
“We respect them, but we want to show our quality.
“They are coming off a loss to St Mirren, so they will be fired up, but Ibrox is our place and we want to make it a fortress.”
