A gale-force wind howled around Dumbarton over the course of the 90 minutes, with the Light Blues racing out to a 4-0 lead in the first half before they added another two goals after the restart despite attacking against the blustery conditions.
Speaking to RangersTV after the victory, McCallum praised his team’s display: “It was just a crazy game, with the conditions, gale-force winds, rain coming down as well, so it was quite difficult. As much as we’re playing the game, we’re also fighting against what were quite difficult conditions.
“A lot of credit to the boys in how they dealt with that because it’s different. We made a strong start to the game, got an early goal, and it was just a case of finding ways to play when we could and the conditions allowed, but also trying to find a way to be streetwise to a certain degree. I thought over the course of the game we did that quite well.
“It’s different because sometimes you don’t know how it’s going to go, sometimes you’ll be put in situations that you don’t expect with the way that the wind was. I think there was a moment in the second half where there was a shot that looked like it was heading over the fence, but it catches the wind and comes back onto the pitch again.
“It was one of those days where things were happening that were unexpected, but that’s part of what today was looking like. They did it well and I’m pleased with the fact we had a good balance of trying to be us, and trying to play when we could, but also rolling our sleeves up and just fight the conditions in front of us so that was pleasing.”
Robbie Ure and Charlie Lindsay were on the scoresheet for the Gers on the afternoon, while there were also contributions from Connor Young, who grabbed a brace, and second half substitute James Graham, both of whom have had to bide their time at points this term.
He continued: “James has scored a couple of goals in recent weeks and today was a James Graham type goal where he’s faced the man up, got himself ahead of him and managed to get into a position where he can pass it by the goalkeeper. I’m pleased for both of them, and pleased with their energy, enthusiasm and quality today, and that’s a good reflection of how they want to be.
“Connor Young scoring within a minute of kick-off, with the penalty as well, scoring the type of goal that you don’t probably expect Connor to score as previously he’s scored from distance, but he’s more than capable of doing that.
“For Robbie to get on the scoresheet was pleasing as well as he’s desperate to get himself going again in terms of goals. The spread of the goals was important, but just the fact that we’ve continued to create, even when we were going against the strong wind in the second half, there was good bits of play and we probably could have scored more but unfortunately that wasn’t the case.”
