The B team boss took time to reflect on tonight’s impressive performance and was delighted with how the team handled the challenge against the League Two side.
Speaking exclusively to RangersTV after their dominant victory, he said: “We had a really strong performance tonight; we scored seven excellent goals.
“A big plus from tonight is that our two centre backs played against a real challenge in centre forward in John Gemmel. “I’ve known him for a number of years, and I know how effective he can be, they stood up to a real challenge tonight.
“We knew we had to defend and Bud [Lewis Budinauckas] made some excellent saves, but we got a clean sheet too.
“We’ve played a team who are sitting at the top of League Two, they’re a team who have been really good this season. We knew that there was a defensive challenge tonight, we knew we had to defend and that there would be threats – I’m just so pleased that the players stood up to that challenge.
McCallum outlined his delight to secure their place in the next round of the tournament and insisted that the squad enjoys the challenge from each opposition.
He continued: “We really enjoy this competition, we’ve did it over the last couple of years.
“We knew that tonight was going to be another tough game, whoever we are drawn against it will continue to be a challenge, but you enjoy them because you know that you come up against teams who will cause us problems.
“Tonight, we hit the heights in both defensive and attacking, I’m just so pleased the lads managed to reach those heights in both senses.”
