The B Team Boss reflected on Saturday’s excellent winning performance against Gretna in the Lowland League as they prepare to travel away from home to face David Gormley’s side in their next fixture.
Speaking exclusively to RangersTV ahead of their upcoming match, he said: “It was a really good performance. The lads in the first half really took the game to Gretna and always made sure that we were always on the front foot. We’ve looked back on the game with the players, I thought in the first half we could’ve been a bit more ruthless in the final third action to get the shot away. There was a bit of patience involved in the second half, five excellent goals with five different goal scorers as well. It was an enjoyable game and an enjoyable performance.
“We’ve played Broomhill already and we’ll look back on that game, we’ll always look back on games to try and adapt. We’ll look forward to it, but we’ll respect ourselves first and make sure that we push ourselves to our standards to the levels we think we can reach.
“Broomhill will challenge us as well; we have to be aware of them but make sure we push ourselves first and foremost. Alloa’s astroturf pitch is nice and open, we’ll enjoy that one. We had a good game earlier in the season in the SPFL Trust Cup so it is one that we’ll look forward to, we know that it will be a good surface and hopefully, it will suit us and how we want to play.”
McCallum added that the progression of some B Team players to the first team, allows opportunity for some of the younger boys to push on with their development in the Lowland League.
He continued: “With those players [Alex Lowry, Charlie McCann, and Leon King] getting opportunities to train and play with the first team, it does leave openings for us. The younger lads that have come in from the U18’s have stood up well and enjoyed that challenge.
“There’s a lot to be excited about when you see these players get opportunities, that might result in one or two bumps along the way because it’s new to them to play against men as well because they’re a little younger – but that’s part of the journey and what this programme is about. It’s enjoyable and that’s part of what we see our task is being, we’ll keep pushing and developing the players but knowing that we might have to manage some difficult roads as part of that journey.
“We’ve got a lot to look forward too, we have some exciting games and that will be a motivation factor for them to keep in their head. It isn’t just about the games; they’ve still got some training opportunities to try and keep pushing themselves.
“Some of the B team lads were involved in the friendly against Brentford, when you see these potential openings, that has got to continue to push to make sure that our standards remain the same. We have to respect our opposition, but we have to respect ourselves. The players need to be respecting themselves in terms of the levels that they should be reaching to try and keep that consistency from now until the end of the season.”
