The team boss reflected on tonight’s dominant performance in the league campaign and insisted that the squad created a lot of control across the pitch.
Speaking exclusively to RangersTV following their positive win away from home, he said: “The first thing I have to say is two outstanding goals tonight, we had created enough chances, but I thought it was just getting to that point in the game where it was needing something different to make a difference.
“Arron [Lyall] took a strike around 25-yards to drill it into the top corner, it was sensational to put ourselves ahead. The second one just after half-time with Ross [McCausland] who guided it in from the far corner, I’m really pleased with those two. Thereafter, we created a lot of control and chances but a pleasing night.”
McCallum highlighted the importance of maintaining a clean sheet in this evening’s away fixture but outlined that the squad must continue to carry a threat towards the opposition’s backline.
He continued: “It’s clear we’ve not done that enough this season, that’s obviously pleasing. We spoke about that after the game where they [Gretna] did have chances, the biggest bit that we have to get balance between is just show control but still carry a threat, we keep challenging the players to build and have a threat against the backline.
“The second half we had more control and less turnovers , we were able to restrict Gretna in the second half, that’s the balance that we’re going to have to ask the players to try and find.”
The B team boss looked ahead to the exciting fixture list that lies ahead as the Rangers U19 squad commence their UEFA Youth League group stage against Ajax next week at the De Toekomst.
He added: “You always feel good when you’ve won a game, but now the attention turns to ensuring that we prepare well enough against Ajax in what will be a really tough game but an exciting programme we’re excited to be in and one we’re looking forward to.”
