The B Team boss reflected on the challenging match against John Potter’s side as the B squad now head to the next stage of the tournament.
Speaking exclusively to RangersTV following their positive win in the cup fixture, he said: “We set an objective at the start of the campaign, we wanted to top the group, the boys set some individual targets and we’re delighted for the boys that they’ve done that. I thought in the first half we probably turned the ball over more than we would’ve liked to and attacked every time we had possession of the ball, I think that makes it quite frantic and transitional.
“We wanted to spend a bit more time on possession of the ball and not rush to get to their box to control the game a bit longer, I thought we were better in that in the second half.
“We were against a strong wind in the first half, we probably didn’t create as much as we would’ve liked. It’s important to say that Jay Hogarth has had a couple of huge moments, two saves from the penalty which was huge for us as it was right on half time, and it could’ve changed the flow of the start of the second half.
McCallum added his delight to progress to the next round of the cup competition as the squad achieved individual and collective targets in their first four matches.
He continued: “We’re really looking forward to it, the tournament is important, and we want to go and do well. On each of the occasions, it’s been reasonably strong teams that have come against us and we’ve performed well. It’s a case now to go into the individual game and set a target to get to the final.
“We set a target of getting two clean sheets in the four games and we achieved three, we’re pleased with that. [Tony’s] goals this season tell you that he just finds his way to sniff opportunities and being in the right place at the right time – I’m delighted for him.”
