The Light Blues started well and went ahead through Charlie Lindsay’s strike before being reduced to 10 men midway through the first half. The hosts turned the match in their favour as they went in at the break in front however the Gers responded well in the second period through two Arron Lyall penalties to take home all three points.
Speaking to RangersTV after the win the head coach was happy with the start his side made and how they performed in the second 45 minutes to claim the win.
He said: “I thought we started really well and we scored a really good goal from Charlie Lindsay, good build up play and he arrived in the areas that we asked him to in an attacking sense.
“I thought we got ourselves into some really good positions at that point, obviously never managed to get the second and then the sending off does change the game, we didn't react particularly well to that.
“Then we lose the two goals getting towards half time, and the big conversation then was just about how much belief they had to still go and be us, still go and dominate possession, be a bit more patient with a man down when we get closer to their box but be ready to defend as well.
“I almost felt every time we were under pressure it came off the back of a technical error, a moment we weren't in control and were loose in possession and had to defend off the back of that.
“I thought the boys in the second half their energy was excellent, their decision making was better out with the latter part of the game, but a good performance and a well-deserved win.”
The head coach has hailed his side’s reaction in the second 45 minutes after speaking to his players at the break and has highlighted the energy levels they showed with the man disadvantage.
He continued: “The message was to still be us, go and show personality and belief, the way we play still works with ten men it is just about getting closer to the ball, it is just one man less, that was the key message and I thought they did that really well.
“We needed to give us possession sometimes as you do against an extra man, but still not dropping energy, you still want to get close to them when the opportunity allows and I thought we did that really well.
“The latter part of the game was just a little bit loose at times and we had to defend a bit more, but I thought the second half was an excellent reaction to being down 2-1 and a man down.”
McCallum has highlighted the play that lead to the two penalties and says the side got their rewards for the football they played in the final third.
He added: “People talk about us getting two penalties but the reason why that happens is because we spend enough time round about the boxes and ask enough questions. Jack has done really well to drive towards the box, he has committed the defender and I think we had an overlapping run round the outside from Connor Allan but Jack has chosen to use the space and he has asked a question of the defender. He has committed to the tackle and Jack's got ahead of him before he's managed to step in, it is a penalty.
“The second one there is conversations about James being onside having put the ball in the net already but Connor Allan has asked a question of the keeper and he has got in before him, that is why we move him into the middle of the pitch, we know he has got an attacking threat.
“I know that he started at centre-back but when you are a man down you need a bit more energy and legs to go and attack spaces and he has got that in abundance and he has done that really well when we have asked him to do that, so he earned that penalty as well and Arron has done excellently to go and put the two away.”
