As the Light Blues head into the second half of the league season, McCallum reflected on his squad and the improvements they have made since the opening game of the Lowland league campaign.
Speaking exclusively to RangersTV, he said: “We’ll always be reflecting, that’s an ongoing process of the group and individuals. What we’ll look to do going forward, is use the experiences that we’ve had from the first part of the season and make sure that we learn where we have to. We’ll set targets for the latter part of the season to make sure that we are always looking forward and working towards achieving as individuals and as a group.
“We’ll look back at games and see certain challenges, there’s been a lot of games where we have felt we have managed the challenges very well. Bonnyrigg Rose are currently sitting top of the league as it stands, but we went into that game against them and had a really strong performance with a positive result. There were some strong individual performances that day particularly, it’s important that we use those types of benchmarks going forward.
“There have been other games where we’ve maybe not performed as well and maybe not got the result that the lads set out to try and achieve, we want to try and learn from those moments, but more than any of that it’s always about the individual. We always keep reminding the players of the importance of day-to-day work because we have so many opportunities here.
“We want to make sure that [over] these next four months, these players can recognise what they can achieve as a group, but more importantly what they can achieve from themselves – and hopefully at the end of that, there will be some first-team opportunities. Performance is the matchday stuff and the competitive nature, but we want to try and make sure that what we do on a daily basis helps to keep pushing their development, because as I say our winning is our player progression.”
The Young Gers kick start their 2022 run of games today as they welcome Dalbeattie Star to Dumbarton Stadium. The B team boss reflected on their last meeting with Ritchie Maxwell’s side and outlined the learning moments from that game heading into the weekend’s fixture.
He continued: “If we go on that individual basis, we lost our last game against Dalbeattie Star that’s the first thing we have to mention. We look back on that game and we lost it for two scenarios, we had enough chances to score a few goals in there and we didn’t take them – we weren’t ruthless enough in front of goal, albeit we did create. Keeping patience of the goal but maintaining focus so that we still have defensive responsibility.”
