Speaking to RangersTV after the game, McCallum insists there are areas for improvement moving forward but says his side can certainly take encouragement from their display: “It’s not very often we’re involved in games where neither team has scored. For 60 minutes, I was really happy, we looked like where we wanted to be. The biggest challenge will always be what we create in the opposition’s penalty box – Arron Lyall’s had two very good moments and I thought he was very good for large parts of tonight.
“After we missed the penalty, we looked like we were chasing the result and I thought we became a little bit too open, giving up one or two opportunities as a result of that. There was a lot of things we were happy with in terms of control, identity and how we want to look, but we want to try and maintain our focus during the spells where we haven’t found the goal to put us ahead, and trying not to change too much and believe in what we’re trying to do that we will get the end result.
“We’re pleased with what we did until a point, but it's just that bit from the penalty kick onwards, when you’ve not got that goal ahead, and how you keep control, rhythm and calmness, and still maintaining that identity.”
Although the Gers failed to find the back of the net at one end, it marked a second successive clean sheet for the side at the other after their 4-0 win over Bo’ness United at the weekend.
He continued: “We’re playing against players where, you look at Bob McHugh who has played top level football, you expect a challenge. We knew that they would ask us a lot of questions and make it difficult for the young lads at the back, but I thought we dealt with that well for the most part. When we had to do the bit of defending where we needed to put our bodies on the line, we did that as well.
“We’re a team who have scored 58 goals this season, it’s not normal for us not to have scored tonight. Fair play to East Kilbride who have made that difficult for us, and we have to find a way when the next game comes. We have to continue to keep that focus and not lose goals at the other end so that’s a big plus.”
