The B team boss expressed his excitement to secure their place in the final stage of the tournament after knocking out Tommy McIntyre’s side on penalties.
Speaking exclusively to RangersTV after their semi-final win, he said: “It was an interesting game; I think the word that comes to mind when describing the lad’s performance is character. Going behind twice and going to penalties, to try and deal with that whilst performing in the right way during the setbacks shows the players and team in good light.
“I thought the first equalising goal was outstanding, the volley from Ross [McCausland] was a sensational finish. We’re just delighted that they put in a performance and get a result that got us to the final.
“We wanted to be in the final, the Glasgow Cup is a tournament that we’ve done well in over the years. I think this might be the first non-Old Firm final for a number of years, we wanted to try and make sure that that was another motivation that we would try and use to ensure that we were going to be there at the end.
“We’ve done that, and we’re pleased – we’ll prepare for our league game this weekend and look forward to the final thereafter.”
McCallum added that the squad have performed well in numerous games throughout the season after playing Celtic several times in recent weeks.
He continued: “They’ve stood up to games really well, we’ve had to adapt and adjust at different points. They’re adaptable and resilient, we’ve had some bumps along the way which has caused some frustration amongst the group, in these types of games they’ve stood up and shown themselves in a good light.
“They thoroughly deserve to be in the final, we’ll look forward to getting whoever that may be.
“We’ve played each other a lot in recent weeks [Celtic], they’re always going to be some small abdications during the game and that’s what happened today.
“It just shows the players recognise that whatever happens during the game, we have to do what is needed in order to find a result and a performance at the same time. Great credit goes to Bud [Lewis Budinauckas] who pulled off the only save in the penalty shootout as well, top performance and top result.”
