The B Team boss reflected on the squad’s winning performance tonight after beating David Gormley’s side 2-0 away from home in the league campaign.
Speaking exclusively to RangersTV after the match, he said: “It was probably a game of two halves in terms of performance, we made the game quite individual and went to areas of the pitch that left us quite isolated and resulted in us not winning the one v one scenarios and us defending our box more than we would’ve liked to. Half time was more about reminding the lads of the standards and levels that they have set over a period of time.
“We understand that we can’t always reach that, sometimes it may be the opposition that makes that the case or whether it’s us not being as sharp in our mindset in the way we want to play. Credit to Broomhill as well in terms of how they pressed us, but we do believe that we can play quicker, better and play through pressure. The second half was probably closer to what we expected that to be. I think sometimes in these games when you’re not at that level, you can be punished – that wasn’t the case tonight but that’s credit to the boys.
“Broomhill still kept their energy in the game, particularly out of possession and tried to make it difficult for us. I’m more pleased about the challenges that we set at half time, although we got a goal in each half, we are much more content and pleased at how we tried to play the second half. It’s more like how the guys have played most of the season.”
McCallum expressed his delight for Darren McInally returning to the squad from injury in recent weeks and the impact he made this evening after progressing well in his recovery.
He added: “Darren is an infectious character; his energy is never-ending. He got ten or fifteen minutes tonight and you know when he goes on that he’ll bring energy. When you ask him to do a certain job, he does that, he deserves to be in the group – he just wants to play and he’s always looking for that opportunity.
“We’ll keep looking for those moments and opportunities for that to happen as the season progresses, but it shows any of the U18’s that pushing themselves into a position that makes it difficult for us, then hopefully more doors open for them as well.”
