Nicola Docherty Motivated To Keep Winning Trophies

NICOLA Docherty insists she’s determined to add to Rangers’ trophy haul again next season.

The Light Blues captain helped Jo Potter’s side make history by lifting the Scottish Cup for the first time in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Hearts at Hampden.

Goals from Rachel McLauchlan and Lizzie Arnot made sure the Gers brought the trophy to Ibrox.

Docherty also won the Sky Sports Cup in March and she says the squad refused to let missing out on the league title on the final day of the SWPL season derail their cup hopes.

Speaking to RangersTV, she said: “We wanted to write our own bit of history and emulate what the men have achieved.

“We want to win trophies at Rangers and we are on our way to doing that.

“We have won two trophies this season and we have Champions League football to look forward to next season.

“It is hard to sum up this group as they have been fantastic to work with. It is the most enjoyable football I have played since coming back to Rangers.

“The togetherness shone through, I have always said it was second to none.

“We could have crumbled after last week’s disappointment in the league, but credit to the girls as soon as that game happened, everyone came into training on Tuesday with a positive mindset to finish on a high and we have.

“We wanted to use it as motivation. We knew it was a tough way to end things, but we knew we had a cup final, with a chance to win our first Scottish Cup.

“To do that with this special group, credit to all the players, all the staff worked tirelessly behind the scenes and I want to thank the team they have been outstanding.”

Docherty was delighted to see so many Rangers fans flocking to the national stadium as they made it a cup double.

She hopes those who came along for the first time become regulars as their backing got them over the line at Hampden.

She added: “The atmosphere was great and we always thank those fans who come week in and week out to support us.

“Those fans who have come along to the final, we hope they enjoyed it and come back again next season.

“When you play a cup final at Hampden, the fans were incredible and they kept us going right to the end.”
