Kirsty Maclean Proud To Lift Silverware With Teammates

KIRSTY Maclean says lifting silverware was her motivation during her injury lay-off.

The midfielder missed four months of the season due to a knee problem she suffered in January.

The playmaker marked her return in the final two matches of the league season before starting Sunday’s 2-0 Scottish Cup final win over Hearts at Hampden.

Maclean always targeted a Hampden appearance and she was delighted rehab sidekicks Rachel McLauchlan and Kirsty Howat also got to play their part at the national stadium.

Speaking to RangersTV, she said: “It is an amazing feeling to get some silverware.

“Being injured was tough but the girls were great with me.

“My aim was to come back for the last few games of the season and to play at Hampden was amazing.

“Everyone wants to play in a cup final, but when you are injured you just want to play in any game.

“But I had this game in my head and I am so glad to play my part.

“There were a few girls who were injured with me, Rachel and Kirsty Howat, so to all come back and win the Scottish Cup is special.

“I am over the moon, I don’t have the words to describe it, it is an amazing feeling.”

A superb strike in the first half from McLauchlan had the Gers ahead before Lizzie Arnot sealed the victory late on.

Boss Jo Potter and her players made history by lifting the trophy for the first time and Maclean says it showed they have the right character to claim the cup, seven days on from losing the league on the final day of the season.

She added: “I am so proud of the team and we deserved that as we played really well.

“We showed our character, last week was disappointing and we came back in on Tuesday, lifted ourselves and we put in a good performance at Hampden.

“I am really pleased with how this season has gone. I came through the academy and have been here for ten years now.

“When you are coming through you dream of winning trophies so to win a double is amazing.

“When I was ten-year-old, you dream of being in the first team and winning trophies so I am really happy to achieve that.

“It is massive to win the first Scottish Cup.

“As a team we have shown how good we are and the Scottish Cup win just finishes the season off.”

Maclean praised the backing of the large Rangers fans and thanked them for their support throughout the campaign.

She said: “The fans are amazing and they have been great all season and this is for them.

“They deserve it, they come to every game home and away. They even make the away games feel like home ones.

“They have been great for us this season.”
