SEASON SO FAR
After three consecutive league defeats at the start of the 2023/24 season, Lee Johnson was replaced as Hibs head coach by Nick Montgomery. The former Scotland Under-21 international made an instant impact at Easter Road as he guided the Hibees to a five-match unbeaten run in the Scottish Premiership. They also reached the semi-final of the Viaplay Cup where they lost 1-0 to Aberdeen at Hampden Park on November 4.
Following a 4-0 defeat at Ibrox on October 21, Hibs enjoyed a run of three consecutive draws then three consecutive wins in the Scottish Premiership. But a slump in form saw the Edinburgh side go eight games without a league win between December 16 and February 17. They stopped the rot with a 2-1 home victory over Dundee on February 24.
Montgomery’s men will be keen to avenge their 2-0 Scottish Cup quarter-final defeat to Rangers prior to the recent international break. Hibs arrive at Ibrox this afternoon having won three and drawn three of their last six Scottish Premiership matches.
PREVIOUS MEETING
This afternoon’s match marks Rangers and Hibs’ fourth meeting of the season. The first of those matches came here at Ibrox on 21 October when Philippe Clement’s reign as Light Blues manager got off to the perfect start, with a 4-0 triumph.
It was a result that ended Nick Montgomery’s unbeaten run at the beginning of his tenure as Hibs’ head coach. Two firmly struck efforts from Abdallah Sima helped Rangers to the three points while a fine strike from Nicolas Raskin and a calm finish from Cyriel Dessers completed the rout in front of a crowd of 49,535.
Rangers travelled to Easter Road on January 24 and once again ran out comfortable winners. In their first match after the winter break, Ridvan Yilmaz’s maiden Premiership goal put the Light Blues ahead on the half-hour mark.
Todd Cantwell doubled the visitors’ advantage in first-half stoppage time with a shot from the edge of the Hibs penalty area that gave goalkeeper David Marshall no chance. And the 3-0 victory was completed with 11 minutes remaining as substitute Dessers found the back of the net.
The two sides met again at Easter Road earlier this month in a Scottish Cup tie. A goal in each half from John Lundstram and Fabio Silva completed a 2-0 victory for Rangers in front of a crowd of 14,297 and set up a semi-final encounter with Hearts.
