Mohamed Diomande and Vaclav Cerny were on the scoresheet at Ibrox, and the Rangers boss said taking maximum points was the most important thing as he looks to build consistency with his squad.
Speaking to RangersTV at full-time, he said: “It is really important to get the three points and to have a good performance after a European night which was an excellent performance.
“We could've done better in the first half today, our tempo was too low there but the second-half was much better. We could have scored more than two goals, but the St Mirren goalkeeper was really strong today in several actions.
“Of course, you want to score the third and the fourth goal and it calms down a little bit, but it is important to take these three points and continue like that.
“It was important to start well in the second-half because we knew St Mirren would get belief out of scoring that goal and that is what the players did.
“We started today with seven new players who were not in the building last season, so it is good experiences like this to get a win, to dig in, to fight and to raise our level in the second half. They can see what level we need for all season to get results, and we are going to work hard on that.”
On the winning goal, which saw Cyriel Dessers and Vaclav Cerny combine from a quick throw-in, Clement added: “Cyriel takes the ball directly and shows the hunger and the passion that he has to win games here.
“He gives everything for that, so I am really happy the way he came on the pitch. It is what I expect from every player who comes on the pitch to give this extra energy, and all the others did also that came in.
“That needs to be our strength these next couple of months to keep consistency in the results with all the number of games that we have every three days.”
Next-up for Rangers is a trip to Pittodrie to face Aberdeen on Wednesday night. On what the next few days holds for his players, Clement continued: “It is a really short time, tomorrow it is more a recovery day and the guys who didn't play will have a good training session and on Tuesday we will have a tactical session.
“We are looking forward to that, to see how our squad now plays at that level. We already did good things this season, we need to create consistency.”
