Rangers Soccer Academy staff travelled to Taiwan earlier this year to select the final squad from over 170 players across the island.
From March to July, the squad met up for various training camps, with Rangers Soccer Academy delivering a number of online workshops and sessions to further aid the players’ development.
The squad of 12 then travelled to Scotland and participated in a five-day pre-tournament training camp at Inverclyde National Sports Training Centre, which included several training sessions, analysis and a trio of matches against local youth clubs and the Soccer Academy’s Elite Centre squads.
Ready for the main event in Sweden, the team of 12, competing under the name of Victory United, made an impressive run to the quarter-finals.
Indeed, the side’s group consisted of a team from Sweden, Mexico and England, where they advanced with three wins out of three and scoring an impressive 23 goals.
In the knockout stages, meanwhile, Victory United recorded a 13-0 win over a team from Luxembourg, an 8-1 triumph over a side from Germany, and a 3-0 victory over a team from Lithuania, before bowing out of the tournament to a strong side from France.
Peter Kennedy, Rangers Soccer Academies Manager, commented: "This project has been unique and something I have really enjoyed from the beginning at the selection process all the way through to the Gothia Cup Tournament.
"Overall, there had been a massive improvement from start to finish and an experience the players will remember for the rest of their lives, playing against so many different players and nationalities and performing to such a high level in a world-renowned tournament.
"We hope the players involved took a lot from the programme and have gained information to help make them a successful football player in the future."
