Report: Gers Defeat Motherwell By Six At Home

RANGERS beat Motherwell 6-0 in the final home match of the Scottish Women’s Premier League season.

First-half goals from Nicola Docherty, Kirsten Reilly and Rachel McLauchlan had Rangers three ahead at the break before Zoe Ness, Clare Gemmell and an own goal added to that in the second-half.

Malky Thomson named six changes from the side that beat Forfar 4-0 on Wednesday evening with Brogan Hay, Kirsten Reilly, Zoe Ness, Lizzie Arnot, Sam Kerr and Brianna Westrup coming into the starting XI.

In the opening five minutes, Lizzie Arnot’s corner was headed wide by Carly Girasoli as Gers looked for an early breakthrough. That did come with just four minutes on the clock as Clare Gemmell found the run of Nicola Docherty as she drove into the box and hit an effort across goal and into the bottom corner of the net.

Docherty was causing problems for Motherwell down the left and delivered a dangerous ball into Zoe Ness shortly after but her shot was just wide of the target.

In the 17th minute, Rachel McLauchlan cut inside before feeding the ball into captain Clare Gemmell but her shot was wide of the target.

Brogan Hay had a fantastic opportunity to double the advantage as Zoe Ness lifted the ball over the top with the winger beating the Motherwell defenders for pace to go through on goal. Her initial shot was blocked by the keeper and at the second attempt cleared off the line by Chelsie Watson.

Rangers did get a second just before the half-hour mark as Kirsten Reilly found herself in space 25-yards out and drilled a left-footed effort into the back of the net.

The pressure paid off for Malky Thomson’s side as they added a third with 10 minutes of the first half remaining. Nicola Docherty’s cross met Lizzie Arnot who’s shot bounced off the keeper but Rachel McLauchlan was on hand to tap home from close range.

Abbey Skelton tried a shot from distance for Motherwell before the break but it drifted just wide of Megan Cunningham’s post before at the other end Rachel McLauchlan was denied a second as Trully Pollard pulled off a good save.

Into the second-half Rangers added a fourth on the 53rd minute, a cross was delivered into the box by Rachel McLauchlan which Zoe Ness headed home.

Rangers got a fifth as Lizzie Arnot delivered a good ball into the box which was turned into the back of the net by Motherwell’s Jordan McLintock. Arnot herself had the ball in the back of the net with 10 minutes of the game remaining as she tapped home a Brogan Hay cross but it was flagged for offside.

In her final home game for the club before retiring, Clare Gemmell got on the scoresheet as she made it 6-0 heading home a Brogan Hay cross.
