Gers kept their composure and the majority of possession throughout the first half of the game, with effective build-up play and the creation of multiple chances for themselves.
A few minutes after kick-off, Arron Lyall almost opened the scoring with a powerful strike inside the box but falling just wide of the goal. B Team Captain, Kyle McClelland, delivered an excellent cross to Robbie Fraser just outside the 18-yard box who’s first touch landed to the feet of Lyall.
Fraser made a forceful header moments later after a lovely delivery from Cole McKinnon but was denied by the home side’s keeper.
Spartans began to build momentum and created chances for themselves but they weren't able to break through the Light Blues’ competent defence.
Blair Henderson almost broke the deadlock for the boys in white after a cutting cross from Sam Newman but his shot came back off Jay Hogarth.
Tony Weston was then booked after a challenge on Michael Allan just outside the away side’s box. Spartans were awarded a free-kick but the cross was cleared by the young Light Blues defenders.
Spartans had the opportunity to take the lead towards the end of the first half after a threatening corner kick from Jones landed dangerously within the box but Hogarth punched it out of play to keep the score level.
The Gers kept their pace up and Fraser made an excellent run down the wing, driving past Spartans’ defence to deliver a cross into the home side’s final third, linking up well with Weston whose header landed on top of the goal after being unable to keep it low.
The Light Blues continued to create the play in their search for the opening goal. Devine crossed another threatening ball into the box, connecting with Fraser but was again unable to keep it low and headed it over the crossbar for a goal kick.
Charlie Lindsay fed a dangerous through-ball to Devine past the Spartans defence who provided a ball into the box but it was collected in the hands of Blair Carswell keeping it level going into half-time.
Rangers continued to build their momentum and pace in the second 45 minutes, pressing high up the park. Moments into the second half, Gers opened the scoring with an excellent strike from outside the 18-yard box from Cole McKinnon, putting it straight past Carswell taking the young Gers into the lead.
Fraser continued to build the momentum for McCallum’s side afterwards, driving forward past Michael Herd and cutting a delivery across the face of the goal to Weston, who was unable to keep his initial touch under control allowing Spartans to intercept.
Robbie Ure almost made it two for the Gers after a lovely cross into the box from McKinnon but he was unable to put it past the keeper who gathered.
A few minutes later, the youngsters had another opportunity to double the score, Fraser continued his pace down the wing to cut a dangerous cross into Ure but it was deflected by a white shirt and out for a corner.
Ure was then taken down just outside the box by Euan Smith, and awarded a free-kick. Lindsay stood up to take the free-kick but struck it wide of the goal.
With 20 minutes left on the clock, Ure made it two for the Gers. Lindsay fed a lovely through ball to the 17-year-old striker who kept his composure to slot it straight past the keeper to put the game to bed.
Fraser wanted to create one last chance for his side, he was on the attack down the wing again delivering a dangerous ball across the face of the goal but was just unable to connect with anyone in the middle with the game ending 2-0 to the visitors at Ainslie Park.
