The Light Blues were dealt a setback midway through the first half when Bailey Rice was shown a straight red card, although the home side responded valiantly by taking the lead through a brace from Ross McCausland.
However, Ajax flexed their muscles after the interval as they scored four without reply to condemn Rangers to defeat in Maryhill.
Jacob Pazikas was called into action early in the contest, saving down low from Chahine Van Bohemen’s strike from inside the penalty area.
Ajax then set their stall early by taking the lead inside eight minutes. David Kalokoh danced between several Rangers defenders before slotting the ball confidently past Pazikas and into the bottom corner.
Olaf Gorter fired over from the edge of the penalty area after being teed up from the left-hand side, before the Gers briefly threatened through the direct running of McCausland down the opposite end.
Rangers were dealt a blow midway through the opening period when Rice was given his marching orders after being adjudged to have denied a clear goalscoring opportunity as Skye Vink was played through on goal for Ajax.
However, the Light Blues offered the perfect riposte as they levelled the game just shy of the half-hour mark. Neat play down the right seen Robbie Ure swivel and shoot at goal from the resulting cut-back before McCausland was on hand to slam home the rebound.
The Northern Irishman was among the action again eight minutes later as he doubled his tally for the afternoon to complete the turnaround for McCallum’s ten men. Zak Lovelace flashed a ball across goal that was cleared out to the lurking McCausland at the edge of the penalty area who stroked an unerring first-time finish into the bottom corner.
The Light Blues were pegged back on the stroke of the interval, however, as Kalokah netted his second goal of the game with a fine finish into the bottom corner following a driving run inside from the left-hand side.
Stains Idumbo-Muzambo stabbed the ball into the side netting shortly after the restart following Kalokoh’s dinked cross to the far post.
The Dutch side then restored their advantage on 55 minutes as Raphael Sarto bundled the ball over the goal line after the ball was teased across goal from the left-hand side.
A fourth goal of the afternoon then arrived for the Amsterdam outfit on the hour-mark. After Rangers had cleared the ball out of the danger area from a free-kick, Van Bohemen lashed a powerful strike past Pazikas from distance.
The visitors extended their lead further with 19 minutes remaining. Vink danced his way to the byline on the right before squaring across to Rida Chahid who stroked the ball into an empty net.
James Graham and Connor Young entered the fray as the Light Blues looked to cut the deficit in the final 15 minutes.
Kristian Webster also replaced Jack Harkness as the 17-year-old made his second appearance of the UEFA Youth League campaign.
Rangers showed promise late in the game as Young’s rasping free-kick was deflected into the arms of the Ajax goalkeeper, but the Dutch side added their sixth of the contest on the counter-attack as Yoram Boerhout raced through on goal before dispatching beyond Pazikas in stoppage time.
The Light Blues will now travel to face Tranent Juniors this weekend as Lowland League action resumes.
