Roofe Getting Fitter and Sharper

KEMAR ROOFE was delighted to net his first goal for Rangers against Kilmarnock at Ibrox on Saturday and the striker is confident he will only improve and get sharper as he continues to build up his fitness levels.

Former Leeds United and Anderlecht striker Roofe, 27, joined the Light Blues on August 4 but prior to that hadn’t played since December 2019 due to a calf injury and then the Covid-19 pandemic.

After making substitute appearances against St Johnstone at Ibrox and Livingston at the Tony Macaroni Arena, he was then handed his first start by Steven Gerrard against Killie and opened his account on 50 minutes, finishing confidently past goalkeeper Danny Rogers from Borna Barisic’s cross as Rangers went on to win 2-0.

Roofe admits it was important for him to get 79 minutes under his belt, and a goal, before he was replaced by Scott Arfield. He said: “It's massive because it gave me more minutes to get fitter.

“I have come in not as fit as the rest of the group, so it's up to me to get as fit as possible every day during training to help the boys out and not let them down."

Barisic’s assist was perfect for Roofe to score his first Gers goal in front of an empty Ibrox on Saturday, and the English forward hopes he can make the most of that kind of quality service from his teammates week in week out.

He continued: "It makes it a lot easier because it takes one thing off your mind. The less you have to think about what you need to do, it just makes everything easier.

When asked what his favoured position is in the Gers frontline Roofe, speaking at this morning’s pre-match Zoom press conference for tomorrow’s Premiership fixture against Hamilton Academical, replied: "To be honest I like all positions.

“I like number 9 and this is where I've been playing for the last few years now, down the middle. But with the system we play any of the four positions is ideal because there is a lot of rotation and there is no fixed position.

Roofe believes the competition for places in attack at Rangers will push every striker in Gerrard’s squad to be at their best when they pull on a blue jersey, including himself.

He added: "Yes, of course and this is one of the reasons I wanted to come to a club like this.

“I knew there was a lot of quality in the dressing room and that's the best way to get better, to compete every day against your teammates to try to earn the shirt for the weekend.

“As long as we can get the three points it doesn't really matter who plays and who scores.”
